Infohost facts and glossary

This section describes in more detail some of the terms used in the 10 steps to a web site section.

This is not a comprehensive list of terms but should be enough to help you get going with your web page development.

free web hosting

  • FTP. A protocol that allows the transfer of files accross the web. Use FTP software to send your web site to your web space.
  • Pages. A web site consists of a number of pages The main page is normally called 'index.html' and common sub pages are called 'contacts.html' and 'aboutus.html'.
  • Images. Web site look better with images (pictures) to spice them up. Use a picture editor that supports jpeg or gif formats.
  • HTML. Write the code for your main web page using HTML. This is a markup language and is very easy to learn.
  • Meta Tags. Add Meta Tags to the Head section of your web pages to help seach engines find them. See our cheats page to learn more.

  • Host. A web host has a server(computer) that can be used to store live web pages. You'll need one of these. Get a web host (some are free!) here.
  • Webspace. You'll need some webspace to host your web site. There are links to lots of web hosts on this site. Click here to find out more.
  • Login. Your web host will provide you with a login(username and password) and ftp address so you can FTP your web pages to his server.
  • Search Engines. These list your web site for people to find using keywords and phrases.
  • Internet.  Lots of connected computers. Very good resource and advertising media
